Can you please let me know what song was played tonight 7:23-ish pm?
About 7:23-ish you heard the Al McKenzie Trio – the track titled Tabernacle, Thanks for listening! WRCJ / Maxology
Hello! I’m wondering the name of the string quartet piece with the solo violin that was named from a novel. It played right before the Bach Partita no. 4. This was written 1/26/23.
Thank you!!!
Hi, that was “Far From the Madding Crowd” by composer Craig Armstrong performed by Angele Dubeau and La Pieta. It’s from director Thomas Vinterberg’s movie adaptation of the novel by Thomas Hardy starring Carey Mulligan.
Any chance the website will eventually include more info than just the name of the piece being played? For instance, the name of the singer, composer, etc…
Hi Christine, we have some updates planned, stay tuned…
Yay! Merry Christmas =)
I’ve noticed announcers are sometimes saying “Sousa alarm” and other times “Sousalarm”. I prefer the latter, since it sounds a little more modern and can be said with more gusto 😉 – though I’m happy with either term. Perhaps WRCJ should consider trademarking “Sousalarm”… I checked TESS and the term is not trademarked. Wikipedia says the term was used by WMCG-FM, the precursor of WRCJ, so you have some prior use of the term. It’s also perhaps worthwhile entry for WMCG to add a reference to WRCJ, and/or add a Wikipedia entry for WRCJ.
Thank you for being one of the only classical music stations in the world that recognizes soundtrack music as modern classical.
I love all of your excellent selections.
You guys are the best.
Thanks Ted! There’s lots of great movie music out there. It would be a shame to not include it.
where is the link for saturday cinema?
Hi Mike, you can see that page here: https://www.yourclassical.org/topic/saturday-cinema
excellent thank you
Hi, Mindy – Listening to you in my little house in San Ramon, Costa Rica. You just played Saint-Saens “The Dying Swan” and it brought back one of the most emotional experiences. I was living in NYC, Lincoln Center had just opened, and on June 6, 1968 (yeah, I’m old) I attended the Bolshoi Ballet’s first performance there (the height of the Cold War). Just before the curtain came up, an announcement was made that Bobby Kennedy had been shot, and then Maya Plisetskaya in front of the curtain with a single spotlight danced to the music as a tribute (remember this was the height of the Cold War). Thank you. I still get goosebumps. She can watch her dance with her liquid arms here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgylhPQJnds (not that same performance). I have been listening to WRCJ and your show since I moved here 11 years ago, donate regularly, and love all your classical days and jazzy nights. At this time of year, I especially enjoy your weather reports.
Hi Sharon, wow, thank you for listening from Costa Rica! While that sounds like a sad memory, we understand how it made the dance more impactful and memorable to you. We appreciate your frequent support. Weather reports with snow, coming soon!
Today I was listening and I really enjoyed the music supporting Indigenous people month. I would really like it if more was played on a regular basis. Thank you for diversity and a really great show.
Hi Marie, we are glad you noticed that and are enjoying it. We do our best!
Really nice carols! I didn’t even realize that I was ready for them! Can you please tell us who this was? 8:55 am
Hi Chris, those were from the “Be All Merry” CD by the Choral Scholars of University College, Dubin. You can see more info here: https://www.wrcjfm.org/2021/11/cool-gift-idea-for-the-holidays/
Chris, I got this CD last year as a donation premium. Do it now! It is so wonderful, every single track 🎄🦌
Thank you for the kind recommendation Joy!
Doc Dave,
Can you please once in a while , mention what the time is, in the am and pm, would be quite helpfull
Thanks Mike F
Sure Mike, thanks for listening!
You will want to check your feed to the broadcast signal. A little after 2:00 today, the radio went to static on the 90.9 frequency.
I enjoy the ability to switch to the Livestream broadcast, but the audio is so much better over the radio!
Hi Chris, sorry about that, there was emergency work on our tower today so we had to lower our power. Everything is back to normal now though.
Good to see this info ! I was driving around yesterday and kept obsessively checking the station. “Oh noooo hope everything’s okay …” I figured it would come back up soon. BUT — my afternoon was a little less cool. =) LOVE you WRCJ, keep up the awesome work!
Sorry about that. We are happy to be back!
on friday september 16th what was playing at about like 10:10-10:20 it was a jazz comedy song talking about how the husband left his job and bought hair products
Hi Zane, the fun music story by Marlena Shaw – Go Away Little Boy
https://youtu.be/2L7IFkRaGhY
P.S. Thanks for listening.
90.9 / MAXOLOGY!
Who did the beautiful performance of “Song to the Moon” just after 11am today?
You guys are the best, always!
Hi Sonja, the power outage messed up our play history but we only have three recordings of “Song to The Moon”, from “Rusalka” so it was either the one with soprano Anna Netrebko and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the one with soprano Lucia Popp and the Munchner Rundfunkorchester or the recording for violin featuring Joshua Bell and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.
Thank you! It must’ve been Netrebko, that was my guess from the voice, but wanted to be sure.
Thanks C#, listening now, love your show!
Thank you listener!
A pleasure to listen to the music and to you, Davis!
My father (God rest, 6 mos ago) use to listen to your station way back when & my brother just recently brought to my attention he listens to you in support to as well as in remembrance of my father. One of my fathers favorites was Andreas Vollenweider. Thank you for playing as well as listening to me go on. Happy Father’s Day to all the father’s/Dad’s out there.
Hi Stacey, thank you to your family for listening! We appreciate the note and send our condolences for your father.
Your stream is not working on Internet Radio, PC or ap….
Hi, sorry about that, our building lost power but it has come back on now and we have things up and running again.
Evening! Writing to find out the name of the song played a second ago (it ended around 8:20pm on Friday, May 20th – the male vocalist sang “the Creator has a master plan…”). Many thanks!
Maxine says “That was organist Joey Defrancesco with vocalist / saxophonist Pharoah Sanders on The Creator Has a Master Plan. Thank you for listening!”
hurrah!! john Penny finally has more microphone time!!! PLEASE more of the Mills Brothers!!! Loved, “Up A Lazy River” performed by them!! last Sat. evening. Keep them coming. Carol from Largo, Florida

Davis Gloff! Always a treat to hear you on WRCJ! Loved you on WQRS as well….
Davis thanks you Nisa!
p.p.s – the music is playing fine now…
several times this morning, music introduced by Dr. Dave has not been played.. we’ve been hearing the sounds of silence… e.g. this affected this morning’s Sousalarm. I’m listening via the Windows Media Player for WRCJ….
Sorry about that Phil, all fixed!
At around 5pm April 1, Davis Gloff played a song sung by a basso profundo, but he did not know who the singer was. Sounded very much like the singer from the Grinch classic cartoon song, “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” According to Wikipedia, that was sung by a gentleman named Thurl Ravenscroft, who was not credited for his performance. He was also the (uncredited) voice in the Tony the Tiger Kellogg’s cornflake commercials for 50 years (“There grrrreat!”). Just giving credit where credit is due!
You’d think they could fit his name in somewhere, geez. Thank you Thurl. And Bruce.
omigosh! I just heard this playing (Suite No.4 from Banchetto mucicale – Trk 12-15 Schein) and thought it was a classical version of Stairway to Heaven. Am I crazy or are there some similarities?? Thanks much!
We’d have to check with an actual musician on the similarities of notes but also wanted to mention we actually do have a classical version of Stairway To Heaven in the music library!
Well lets hear it!
Something weird going on this morning–we can hear Dave, but get silence when music is playing.
Sorry about that Geoff, all fixed!
thank you, my buddies…love almost everything, especially wonderful pieces that I’m not familiar with… I really adore listening to Lynn Warfel on Saturdays…love her voice and inflections and comments… I have a picture in my mind, but can’t find a real one…where is a photo of Lynn??? and thanks, everyone for excellence…….Maxine and John, always look forward to your plays, especially the old, wonderful classics….
Hi Darlene, thank you! Here’s a picture of Lynne: https://www.yourclassical.org/profile/lynne-warfel
How nice. I’ve always wondered what Lynne looked like and now I have a face to match that pleasant voice of hers. Thanks for posting this.
I‘m looking for the arranger of Sondheim‘s „Pretty Women.“ It sounded like a jazz piano arrangement and played this evening around 10 pm on March 8.
Any help is appreciated!
Hi Brianna, we didn’t see an arranger listed but maybe the other info will help you find them. That was “Pretty Women” by Marian McPartland from the album “Live At Yoshi’s”.
I’m looking for the song played around 12:45PM EST on 2/27/2022, I wasn’t able to catch its name and I found its, what I would describe as ‘arabic-esque and orchestral mix’, style to be quite a treat.
Hi Jordan, that would have been our broadcast of the Michigan Philharmonic’s “Miniature Masterpieces Mandolin Style”. Here were the pieces on the program:
Alexander Borodin In the Steppes of Central Asia (1880) (arr. Nan Washburn)
Antonio Vivaldi Concerto for Mandolin in C Major RV425 (1725)
Brad Phillips Work for Mandolin and Strings (2021) (WORLD PREMIERE)
Ruth Crawford Seeger Music for Small Orchestra (1926)
Henry Cowell Persian Set (1957)
One of the greats of Detroit, Charlie Gabriel of Preservation Hall Jazz Band, has a new album out called “89”. Shouldn’t this or any of the Gabriel Brothers records, which were recorded in Detroit, be part of the New Orleans Mardi Gras discussion tonight?
Hi Michelle, John tried to get in as many artists as he could but of course couldn’t fit them all.
I just wanted to say that I so appreciate your featuring more Ukrainian composers and performers lately, precisely because your programming does feature a lot of Russian composers and performers, typically. It’s good for listeners to have a deeper understanding of music culture in that part of the world, and how complicated it can be due to politics. Balance and cultural sensitivity are vital attributes for an arts institution to have at this time, and I respect your station for making a good faith attempt to promote them. P.S. Switching to playing a different Bank of Ann Arbor ad spot than the jarring “War and Peace” one–I know there are others–would help a lot, too. Thank you!
Hi Tamara, thanks for noticing. It is sad what is happening right now but hopefully our music helps some people. Oh and yes, the War and Peace spot makes you think of other things now doesn’t it…
As always, love keeping WRCJ on all day as I work from home.
On Monday morning 2/14 sometime before 9:00am the not-Dave announcer described a story where a soloist joined the symphony, but had prepared the wrong piece. As soon as the orchestra started, the soloist realized their mistake, and played the correct piece… with no practice! I am not entirely sure I heard the story correctly, and for sure, I didnt get the name of the Soloist. Can you elaborate?
Hi Chris, that might have been Maria João Pires who had rehearsed one Mozart concerto but as the performance began she quickly realized the orchestra was playing a different one. Thankfully she was able to do the correct one from memory.
a true superstar
Thank you! Very awesome. Clearly a breadth of excellence to draw upon in time of need. But, also, how impressive that she could not only know the music, but accompany an orchestra’s nuances and patterns without preparation!
DAVE asked this AM for comments on the DAY LONG tributes made from time to time for special artists…. I SAY I LOVE IT…
Thanks Lynn, that seems to be the consensus!
Since tomorrow is Groundhog Day (2/2/22), and yesterday we had a Schubert march for the Sousalarm, perhaps tomorrow we could have two Sousa marches for the Sousalarm (?)
Cheers,
Phil Jackson
not the basketball coach
Ha ha, that might confuse some people but we’ll see if Bill Murray is available…
Thank you for this fantastic film score appointment radio show. A devoted fan
You’re welcome Laura, glad you like it!
LOVED THE SUNDAY FILM CLASSIC AS WELL…. took me to Sicily… LOVE Moriconne
Hello, looking for the name of a song that played around 6:55pm thursday , january 27. It was kind of like an electronic / dance song. I heard the DJ say “Paper” something but i can not find it. Thank you.
Hi Matt, are you sure it was our station? We didn’t have anything dance/electronic sounding around that time and nothing with paper in the title.
maybe not you thanks for looking anyway
No problem.
Can anyone tell me the name of the suite playing right now? It’s been on for about 15 minutes, but my music recognition isn’t picking it up. It also says “unknown” here below the live music. It’s STUNNING and I need it.
Hi Nissa, around that time we played the suite “Holberg’s Time” by Grieg. Just in case all the pieces from around that time are below.
10:28amAlbinoni, Tomaso:Concerto in C (for violin, strings, and continuo), Op. 5, No 12
CAPRICCIO:10709
Botvay, Károly

On Squirrel Appreciation Day, I’m going to be putting out my Squirrel feeder. Thank you for reminding me! I’ve been meaning to and keep forgetting. It’s also like soap opera television for my cats.
That’s nice Colleen, the squirrels surely appreciate it. And it’s nice your cats won’t be fighting over the remote.
stewardesses – did you say that one just now? 530pm 1/12/22
I know. I have a lot of useless info in my head!
LOL
Ever since last night I only hear static over the air (and the web). Is everything alright at WRCJ?
Hi Tully, everything is working fine here, are you hearing us ok now?
As of 4 PM on January 21 streaming over TuneIn isn’t working, either through my Sonos app or directly on the TuneIn website on my browser. Other stations (e.g. WQXR) work just fine. This has been a problem all week, and intermittently for several weeks. Plays OK if you click ‘Play’ on the RCJ website, but not if you use any of the options listed above.
Hello Geoffrey, sorry about that, but thanks for the details, we will take a look.
Even the link on the main page is now cutting in and out every three or four minutes–I’ve been playing it through my computer speakers (i.e. not mediated through any other route) and it played fine for an hour and is now silent). as of 5:10 PM on Friday.
Good morning where can I purchase the cd or cd series of Peter and the Wolf narrated piece you played this morning, 1-7-22. It brought back such wonderful memories. I would love to have my grandchildren listen to it and learn the sounds of the different instruments.
Hi A.J., that version of Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” was narrated by David Bowie with music performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy. It was from an RCA disc, spine number 62563, which you can see here: https://www.discogs.com/release/7019053-Prokofiev-Bowie-Ormandy-Philadelphia-Orchestra-Peter-And-The-Wolf
The stream player stopped working recently on the home page, looks like the cert needs to be updated.

Hi Ray, sorry about that, taking a look now…
Same or similar problem this morning (1/6/22), though I was able to listen to the Sousalarm by using the ListenLive option on the web page, above.
Hello other Phil Jackson, the problem seems to be that we have to update our streaming certificate, which we are doing now. We hope to have things restored soon. Sorry for the disruption.
I have not been able to load either
Hi Jim, the problem seems to be that we have to update our streaming certificate, which we are doing now. Sorry for the trouble.
It’s working this morning! Thank you!
Hooray!
I unfortunately missed the name of one of the best songs I’ve heard. It came just before Jimmy Smith’s We Three Kings on December 16 about 9:10PM.
Linda Yohn says: Hi, Thanks for listening tonight! I led into Jimmy Smith’s “We Three Kings Of Orient Are” with the classic “Fly With The Wind” by McCoy Tyner. It is also the title of the recording on Milestone Records. Thankfully, it remains in print. Isn’t the combination of Hubert Laws’ flute and Ron Carter’s bass just perfect with the orchestra and McCoy Tyner’s piano? Again – thanks for listening.
I really appreciated and loved the tribute program for Barry Harris. I truly admired this guy and though I never had any lessons or even never met him, I garnered much from what others have said about him over the years. I thank God for Youtube as it allowed me to hear many of his lessons in his later years.
Bless you all the the music and the interviews!!!
Thank you Donald. He will be missed by many.

Hello! What played right before the 2:00 PM announcements break today, please? (Mon 6-Dec). I could not find it on the playlist; it followed “Late Medieval English Carols”.
It was a light somewhat pizzicato-ish orchestral piece that reminded me a little bit of either Philip Glass or Michael Nyman (guessing wildly, i admit!)
Thanks and super wonderful holiday wishes to all of you at the station.
Hi Michael, that was “Two Households” by John Lunn from the Downton Abbey soundtrack:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCKpqKgK0uU
Super holiday wishes to you too!
what was the name and composer of the advent choral work played this morning?
Hello Mary, that was Morten Lauridsen’s O Nata Lux (Advent) performed by the Junger Kammerchor Rhein-Neckar under Mathias Rickert.
I can’t hear any music this morning with the WRCJ Window Media Player. I briefly heard some music with the Listen Live on the WRCJ web site, then could not hear any music, but can hear Dr. Dave when he speaks. Was not able to hear this morning’s Sousalarm…
Hi Phil, does it work if you copy this address into your web browser? http://pnj-01.stream101.com:9035/live
I had the same problem this morning (12/3/21). I tried rebooting my PC and the problem went away. I can now listen to the Windows Media Player without a problem, so far…
Hello,

That commercial that has the cell phone alarm at the beginning of it with all the honking needs to go. I listen to this station to clam down, not be reminded of my alarm and traffic!
Sometimes such a sound startles me when I’m driving (I always have WRCJ on in the car).
Wasn’t Samuel Coleridge-Taylor an English music composer of color? You featured a movement from his Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast around 3PM(11-19-2021).

Hello Christine, that was Cesar Franck’s Sonata in A (transcribed for flute and piano) performed by James Galway on flute and Martha Argerich on piano.
I really enjoyed listening to Peter Whorf and Dave Wagner chat together during the Funding Drive! They should do that more often – not just in the Funding Drive!
Hi Bruce, glad you enjoyed it but are you sure making it a regular thing is a good idea? That’s a lot of crazy in one room…
Lol! Kind of like Click ‘n Clack but without the wit!
I know they enjoy being back in the studio with their colleagues, but I miss Co-Hosts Maggie and Jake!
They wanted a raise if they were going to be making a commute to the office but we just couldn’t do that. There are rumors they are starting their own podcast.
Oh, My goodness, Please pass this on to Peter Whorf and David Wagner. Numberphile is a YouTube channel that is dedicated to interesting math and numbers. Brady Haran, the producer recently made a video about the mathematical constructs that JS Bach used. Phenomenal! Don’t be put off by the title “Music on a Clear Möbius Strip” which makes the concept sound impossible to comprehend. Brady interviews a mathematician Marcus Du Sautoy, who breaks down Bach’s music in a very straightforward way, but is VERY revealing of Bach’s genius. Search the title on YouTube or go directly to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sToqbqP0tFk.
Thanks Chris, that sounds very interesting. We will pass this along to them.
What was the tune tonight (7:00 pm) right after “Night Time is the Right Time”? Thanks
Hi Helen, after “Night Time is the Right Time” was “Hard Times” by Ray Charles from the album “Fathead – Ray Charles Presents David Newman”.
Thanks WorkerB!
Hi Helen, actually the song was called “Hard Times” and it is from the album called “Fathead: Ray Charles Presents David “Fathead” Newman”. I always post a playlist for the “Swing Set” on this website, but we don’t really have a spot for playlist questions when we’re in fundraiser mode. But, if you want more information, you can always email me direct at lyohn@dptv.org. Thanks so much for listening and for loving jazz on WRCJ.
Thank you, Ms. Yohn. Had a driveway moment with my kid.
Good – so glad to hear that. It’s a real compliment to a radio host from a listener to learn that they created a “driveway moment”. I’m touched and I’m glad that the music touched YOU!
Hello! I started listening to WRCJ when I started working remotely from home – it fit the bill perfectly. While a newbie to classical music (despite my father’s efforts), I have come to enjoy it quite a bit. So much so that I’m disappointed if I miss the Souza alarm in the mornings! Thanks for the great music. (And Hello Worker B – just so you know you’re appreciated too!)
Bruce
Welcome Bruce, thank you for tuning in! If you miss the Sousalarm, no worries, there’s another one around the corner. It’s nice to be appreciated, thanks!
Dave mentioned a pilgrimage he made to Lincoln Cathedral. That led to a cascade of web surfing just now and ended up at the Paston Letters, a correspondence collection from the 18th Century by the Paston family. May make that my pilgrimage! https://www.thisispaston.co.uk/
Thank you Dave and WRCJ
Hi Evan, we accept your cascade of web surfing as pilgrimage. We hope you reached enlightenment!
I followed Dave’s suggestion and just looked up Elise Hall’s photo in her regalia – awesome!
Thanks for the interesting information about the musicians and pieces that you all share.
Keep up the good work.
Thank you Jason, we try not to talk too much but still give those interesting tidbits and related info that listeners might enjoy.
Is workerb a pseudonym ever used by someone famous? e.g. Dr. Dave?
No, no one famous, just one of the many busy little bees behind the scenes who help keep the station going. There’s also WorkerA, WorkerC, WorkerD…
Hello,
I just made a donation & wanted to write a comment about how much this station has meant to me & my family during the pandemic. My father & I would listen to the same amazing music together while he was in lock-up during the beginning of the pandemic. I loved being able to call him, have him turn his Alexa to WRCJ & we would share the Gershwin, Copland, Bach, the Sunday Swing set, Wind & Rhythm, Michigan made music and so much more. One time in the car, we even heard some of Ken Burn’s Civil war sound track together. It is now harder to listen to it without a few tears. but it has been a saving Grace & built lasting memories for me. Many, many thanks!
Amy O’Rourke
Thank you for sharing that Amy, that is very touching. We appreciate your donation.
I live in Wisconsin. When I want to feel closer to my mom in the moment I turn on https://www.wrcjfm.org
I know that day or night, the Classical Days and Jazzy nights are turned on at my mom’s house, upstairs and downstairs. She often has it playing quietly overnight, the radio light glowing on the nightstand while she sleeps.
Oh that’s nice. We appreciate you and your mother tuning in and thank you for sharing that.
I support WRCJ and now I listen to the station at work all day long. It provides me with a relaxing and yet invigorating environment. Who wouldn’t want to support this wonderful station that keeps classical and jazz; both worldwide and national, alive! Thank you WRCJ!
Thank you Cynthia, that’s so nice! We are grateful for your support.
I have a Logitech Smart Radio (Internet). It can not locate the link as posted.
Do you have a solution for me?
I’m guessing most of these internet radio devices use TuneIn?
The URL is http://tun.in/seqtq.
Grace Internet Radio needs this URL – http://66.55.143.200/stream/wrcjfm.pls?mp=/stream
